Birding Information for the State College Area

Current information
about wild birds in the State College area (the area within 25 miles of Old Main at University Park) including raptor, warbler, and water fowl migration, can be found in the listserv group scbirdcl that is associated with the State College Bird Club. Based on postings from 2010-2014, you can expect to receive an average of 5 posts per day when joined to the list. Some of the postings will have information about activities of the Bird Club. Most of the postings are from members of the list who report on specific sightings. Unlike the PABIRDS list below, this list permits the inclusion of attachments like photographs. However, we suggest that the size be kept to a minimum. Some Mail programs like Apple Mail make this easy by allowing size tabs like Small or Medium that automatically reduce the size of the photo.

You may join the SCBIRDCL list (State College Bird Club) by sending an email with the single line

    subscribe scbirdcl your-name

to listserv@lists.psu.edu. The "From" field in the e-mail header should have the address of where you will be sending and receiving email to or from the list. Replace the phrase "your-name" with your name. Your subscription will be confirmed with a "welcome" message with detailed instructions about using the list. After you are subscribed, you will receive a copy of every new message posted to the list, and you may post your own messages to the list.

To send a message to the list, send email to scbirdcl@lists.psu.edu. Please Include a Subject line and sign the email. If you are reporting a sighting, include location information on the Subject line.

To remove your name and email address from the listserv group scbirdcl,  send an email message to: scbirdcl-unsubscribe-request@lists.psu.edu.
No subject or message text is required, but you must send the request from the address that you are removing from the list.

To reduce the number of daily emails sent to you by Listserv, you can use the DIGEST option to request that all postings be sent to you in one daily email. To choose that option, send an email to listserv@lists.psu.edu with the message text SET SCBIRDCL DIGEST. To turn off that option, send the message "SET SCBIRDCL NODIGEST".
