Fall Field Trips:

Saturday, Sept. 17 from 7:30 am - 9am

Join Shaver's Creek naturalist Doug Wentzel for special Saturday edition of a Migration Morning Walk at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center.  Doug will be leading a leisurely hike to see and hear the numerous bird species that migrate through central Pennsylvania. Bring a good pair of hiking boots, binoculars, any guidebooks you have, and an inquisitive mind! Migration Morning Bird Walks are open to birders of all experience levels. Some binoculars are available to borrow.  The walk is Rain or shine.

Sunday Sept 18 at 8 am

CANCELED

Deb and Greg Grove will lead a SCBC field trip to the Big Flat Natural Area with a side trip to the Indian Wells overlook above Bear Meadows. They hope to find mixed flocks of warblers, vireos, etc. Mostly in Huntingdon Co, but the overlook is in Centre.

Meet at Whipple Dam State Park and drive up to Big Flat. Please plan to be at Whipple at 7:30. From there, about a 20 minute drive. Alternatively, you can go directly to Big Flat and meet them at 8:00.

Walk up the short (0.3 mi) side trail from Keith Spring on Bear Gap Road. We then hit the Mid State Trail (MST) and turn left out to the Indian Wells overlook, about 0.75 miles one way. This great overlook provides a great view of Bear Meadows below. We will then reverse and stay on the MST across the Big Flat NA to meet (gated) Gettys Ridge Road which we take back to the cars to complete a loop.Total walking will be about 3.5  miles. Very little elevation change (ele. 2300-2400 ft). Some rocks (especially at Indian Wells) but nothing serious. The walk will take 2-3 hours, depending on birds.

There will be a possible bail-out after returning from Indian Wells for a total of <2 miles walking.

Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 am - 12pm
Mike and Laura Jackson will host a tour of their woodland habitat improvement project just south of Everett, PA.  This is a joint field trip with members of Juniata Valley Audubon Society.  The tour will be in the area that was logged in the fall of 2014 to create early successional habitat for Golden-winged Warblers and other species that depend on young forests.  People should wear field clothes and sturdy shoes.  Don’t forget your binoculars - there are a lot of birds using this habitat.  Bring your lunch and water.  The tour is rain or shine.
