Birding Bald Eagle State Park joint field trip with Juniata Valley Audubon Society

Saturday, November 10, 2018 (9am – 1pm)

Let’s explore Bald Eagle State Park to look for migrating waterfowl, hawks and more. The 5,900-acre Bald Eagle State Park is in the broad Bald Eagle Valley in Centre County. It includes a lake along Bald Eagle Mountain which is surrounded by forests, fields and wetlands. We’ll stop at several birdy places on our way up to the park and within the park. We’ll finish by driving to the dam and taking a short walk on an old road. Bring binoculars, drinks, and snacks. We’ll stop in Howard afterwards for a bite to eat.
Meet at the gravel parking area behind McDonald’s in Milesburg at 9:00 am. View on Google maps.

Winter Birds of Stone Valley

Spend a morning exploring two prime locations in the Stone Valley Experimental Forest for winter birds. Watershed Road and Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center is well known for the high abundance and diversity of wintering birds that seek shelter and food during the colder months. We will first enjoy a leisurely walk along Watershed Rd outside the small town of Masseyburg in hopes to observe Hermit Thrushes, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Red-breasted Nuthatches, sparrows and other possible winter finches. Thereafter, the group will visit and relax at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center with options to stay and relax by the feeders, visit the boardwalk, and/or scan the lake for waterfowl.

Please meet at the Jo Hays Vista parking lot at the top of Tussey Mountain (Route 26) at 8:30am, the group will then carpool to Watershed Road and Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Watershed Road is a well-maintained gravel road that is flat and has very little incline. The group will walk out and back with a total of ~2 miles. Feel free to bring a packed lunch to enjoy at Shaver’s Creek.
