Fall Field Trips of the
State College Bird Club
Saturday, September 21, 2019 (7:30am –
9:30am)
James Cleveland Memorial Trail
Join Julia Plummer for a beautiful and lush forest walk on the
James Cleveland Trail and surrounding Bald Eagle State Forest.
The trail is named after the late James Cleveland (who
actually crashed his plane on the top of this mountain outside
of Center Hall, PA), and is known for its peaceful and less
crowded hikes. Participants will be led through an easy to
moderate (mostly easy) 1.5 mile trail in hopes to find fall
migrants. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a snack, and water. No
facilities. All members and non-members are welcome.
Directions: Traveling south on Rt 144 from Pleasant Gap, turn
left onto Greens Valley Road. Travel 3.5 miles to James
Cleveland Memorial Trail Head.
Saturday, September 28, 2019 (7:30am-10:00am)
Walk at ChicoryLane Farm, Spring Mills, Pa
ChicoryLane Farm is now managed for wildlife habitat,
including old fields, young forest, and wetland. A network of
many trails loop around the property. Be prepared for some mud
and wet grass. We will look for a mix of resident and fall
migrant birds. If rain is heavy, we will cancel, but we will
continue as scheduled with light rain. Drive 20 miles east on
Route 45 from Boalsburg then turn left onto Brush Mountain
Road. Continue about 0.7 mile until you see a straight gravel
driveway heading back to the right, at blue & white sign
#246, into old field habitat. You can navigate in your GPS to
40.875564, -77.549939. All members and non-members are
welcome.

leave early)
Bald Eagle Hawk Watch
Join Susan Braun and Jon Kauffman as they visit a first full
time count on Bald Eagle Mountain for great opportunities to
observe migrating raptors and songbirds. Participants will
have the opportunity to meet the counter, Kaitlin McGee, and
learn how the fall season is progressing and how to identify
raptors in flight.
Bring a packed lunch, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, sunhat, and
folding chair. Site access involves a 0.5 mile walk on a
well maintained grass path. All members and non-members are
welcome.
Directions: Meet at the Grays United Methodist Church (5687
Buffalo Run Rd) along 550, one mile west from N. Atherton St.
Participants will carpool to hawk watch site.
Sunday, November 3, 2019 (8am-11am)
Bald Eagle State Park Field Trip for Northern Shrike
and winter birds.
Bob Snyder will lead a field trip to Bald Eagle State Park to
look for Northern Shrike, possible Snow Buntings, Fox Sparrows
and (maybe) American Tree Sparrows. We will also check
out the lake at several locations for waterfowl.
We will meet at the Milesburg McDonald's (gravel truck lot to
form up) at 8:00 AM, then drive to Lower Green's Run to
look for waterfowl and maybe get lucky with some Snow Buntings
in the parking lot. We will then check out various
locations in the main park area including, the marina
and gravel boat lots, vicinity of the Shrike Trail and
Letterman campground, the beach, the winter/spring boat
launch launch area and Hunter's Cut/FJS Dam.
We will bird until 11:00 or longer if the activity is
high. Please dress to suit the conditions and bring
water and a snack if desired. There are primitive
restrooms open at Lower Greens Run and two other locations in
the main park area.
If the weather looks like rain that Sunday, a decision will be
made on Friday, November 1, to cancel or reschedule the trip.
All members and non-members are welcome.
